Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their books and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their individual beliefs. As more information becomes available – such as player form, injury reports, or weather conditions – this market can react more quickly and efficiently than traditional sportsbooks. It's common to see discrepancies emerge, especially as the event draws closer, as the market aggregates diverse opinions and analyses.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As traders exchange shares, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated based on the latest information and sentiment, offering a unique perspective compared to fixed-odds betting.
