Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, which can sometimes differ from sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven purely by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. This can lead to discrepancies, particularly in events where public perception deviates from the sportsbook's initial assessment. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information and adjust more quickly to new developments than traditional sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The market's depth and trading volume influence how efficiently prices adjust to new information.
