Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, driven by individual traders, can sometimes offer more accurate predictions, especially when a significant amount of volume is traded. However, sportsbook odds can be influenced by public betting patterns, leading to convergence with prediction market prices. It’s useful to compare both to gain a broader understanding of potential outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the aggregate assessment of all traders participating in this market. The market’s price movements are driven by new information, shifts in sentiment, and strategic trading activity, creating a dynamic and responsive prediction environment.
