Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals trading based on their own research and beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can influence the odds on Polymarket accordingly. It's common to see discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is solely determined by supply and demand within Polymarket, and is not influenced by any external factors or other prediction venues.
