Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may set initial lines based on power rankings and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, incorporating a wider range of information. If sportsbook odds significantly diverge from the probabilities implied by this market, arbitrage opportunities might arise for informed traders. However, it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities of an outcome, and neither is guaranteed to be perfectly accurate.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated, providing a real-time assessment of the event’s potential results.
