Typically, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and to balance action, while this market is driven purely by traders expressing their beliefs. If there's a significant discrepancy, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. However, it's important to note that sportsbook odds can change closer to the event, potentially converging with the prediction market price. Analyzing these differences can provide insights into public perception versus professional analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, and the platform facilitates this price discovery process. The more volume traded, the more confidence can be placed in the market's accuracy.
