Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and to balance action, while this market is driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than traditional betting venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price of those shares increases, and the implied probability rises. Conversely, selling shares decreases the price and probability. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
