Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and internal analysis, while this market relies on the willingness of individuals to buy or sell shares representing different outcomes. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant information emerges or as public opinion shifts. Examining these differences can be valuable for informed decision-making, though it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, not certainties.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants, creating a dynamic and evolving forecast of the event’s result. The current volume indicates the level of interest and conviction among traders.
