Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event occurring as assessed by traders. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform sportsbooks in accuracy, particularly when there is significant public interest and information available. However, sportsbook odds can sometimes offer value depending on the specific event and the perceived biases within each market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd and can be influenced by new information, expert opinions, and shifts in public sentiment regarding the Lopez Ocampos vs Duarte match.
