Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a more accurate forecast than traditional sportsbook odds, as they aggregate the wisdom of the crowd and allow participants to financially stake their beliefs. Sportsbooks incorporate a margin for profit, which can skew the probabilities, while this market allows traders to directly express their views. However, initial odds on Polymarket may differ from those found at sportsbooks due to varying levels of information and differing participant bases. It's useful to compare to see where the discrepancies lie and understand the potential reasoning behind them.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to represent the collective prediction. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or other prediction venues. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
