Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook odds which can be influenced by public perception or promotional efforts. Sportsbooks may adjust their lines based on betting patterns, but this market allows for continuous price discovery as new information emerges. While sportsbooks aim to set odds that attract balanced betting, this market’s prices are driven purely by supply and demand among traders who believe they have an informational edge. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before the event begins, as the market aggregates diverse perspectives.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's efficiency depends on the number of participants and the information they incorporate into their trading decisions. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all traders on Polymarket.
