Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which are set by professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public betting percentages and risk management into their lines, while this market is driven purely by individuals’ beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, analytical approaches, or simply varying levels of confidence in a particular player. Examining these differences can reveal insights into where the crowd and the experts diverge in their assessments.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a specific outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability distribution. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic process ensures that the market price reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants.
