Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk assessment, while this market is driven by the collective predictions of individual traders. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Comparing the odds can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making, though it's important to remember they represent different methodologies for assessing probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific player, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability of that player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movement is driven by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own analysis of the match. This dynamic pricing system aims to accurately reflect the collective prediction of the market participants.
