Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view by trading in the opposite direction, potentially causing the prediction market odds to diverge. It's common to see prediction markets more accurately forecast probabilities, especially as the event approaches, due to the continuous flow of information and diverse perspectives.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares of a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. The market dynamically adjusts to new information and changing sentiment, providing a real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
