Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, factoring in a margin for themselves and public perception. This market, however, is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. If a significant number of people believe an outcome is more likely than sportsbooks suggest, the prediction market odds will adjust accordingly, potentially offering value to informed traders. It's important to compare both to form a well-rounded assessment.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price converges towards a consensus view. The market’s depth – the number of shares available to buy or sell at different price points – also indicates the level of confidence and potential liquidity. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
