Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and need to account for profit margins, whereas this market is driven purely by traders’ willingness to buy or sell shares. If a significant number of people believe a player has a better chance of winning than sportsbooks suggest, the price of shares representing that player will increase, potentially offering better value than available elsewhere. It’s a fascinating comparison to see how collective prediction differs from professional analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific player, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of victory. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective prediction.
