Prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profit regardless of the outcome. This market, however, is driven purely by traders’ beliefs, allowing for a more direct expression of probability. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly incorporate new information and react to unforeseen events, potentially offering different insights than those found at traditional betting venues. It's common to see discrepancies between the two.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price dynamically adjusts based on supply and demand, providing a real-time assessment of the perceived probabilities by those participating in the market.
