Generally, prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets move more quickly to incorporate new information, especially regarding player fitness or changing conditions, compared to sportsbook odds, which may update less frequently.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, meaning traders can buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price discovery process is driven by the collective actions of participants, and the platform facilitates this by providing a transparent order book and real-time price updates. This creates a dynamic environment where expectations are constantly refined.
