Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market incorporates the diverse perspectives of many individual traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply the collective judgment of the crowd. It’s common to see this market odds adjust rapidly as new information emerges, potentially leading to divergence from sportsbook lines, especially closer to the event’s completion.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. Higher demand for shares in a specific outcome will drive up its price, indicating a greater perceived likelihood of success, while lower demand will lower the price.
