Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin. This market, driven by the collective wisdom of traders on Polymarket, aims to reflect the true probability of each outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, information availability, and the incentive structures of each venue. If you find significant differences, it could signal an opportunity for value betting, depending on your own assessment of the players' chances.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each player winning. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share directly corresponds to the estimated chance of that outcome occurring, with the total value of all shares summing to 1. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants.
