Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from initial sportsbook odds which are often set by analysts. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public perception or team news, while this market aggregates the views of many individual traders. If a significant amount of money is wagered on one outcome, the prediction market odds will shift accordingly, potentially exceeding or falling short of traditional sportsbook lines. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before a large influx of betting activity occurs in either venue.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price fluctuates, providing a dynamic assessment of the event's potential results. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket.
