Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can take the opposite position, driving the prediction market odds in a different direction. It's common to see discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a given outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of shares is determined by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own analysis. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
