Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the beliefs of a diverse group of traders. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate forecasters of event outcomes, as they benefit from the collective intelligence of participants incentivized to make correct predictions. However, sportsbook odds can still provide a useful benchmark for comparison, highlighting potential discrepancies in perceived probabilities and identifying opportunities for informed trading.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market efficiently incorporates new information and updates its predictions in real-time, offering a constantly evolving view of the expected result.
