Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market is driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, opportunities for arbitrage may arise. However, it's important to remember that prediction market odds are constantly fluctuating based on new information and trader sentiment, so comparisons are a snapshot in time.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective prediction. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and reflects the aggregated assessment of the participants.
