Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by a small number of experts, while this market aggregates insights from many participants. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when there’s considerable uncertainty. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view of the likely outcome, though it’s important to remember that neither is a guaranteed predictor of the result.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform’s design encourages efficient price discovery, as arbitrageurs can quickly exploit any significant differences between the market price and their own assessment of the probability.
