Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event occurring, as determined by traders. This market, like others, can sometimes show divergence from sportsbook lines, potentially due to differing expert opinions, inside information, or simply variations in market participants. It's common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds in accuracy, especially when a large and informed trading volume develops.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, with the total value of all shares summing to 1. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd participating on Polymarket.
