Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If a significant number of traders disagree with the sportsbook’s assessment, the odds here will shift accordingly. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before a lot of information becomes available or when there’s strong public sentiment surrounding the event. Examining these differences can reveal valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the prices adjust, reflecting the aggregated forecast. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is driven solely by supply and demand; if more people believe Paola Lopez will win, the price of shares representing her victory will increase, and vice versa for Leticia Garcia Vidal.
