Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often diverging from initial sportsbook lines as more information becomes available and traders exchange views. Sportsbooks set initial odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individuals. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can take the opposite position in this market, driving the odds closer to their collective assessment. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional sportsbooks over time.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective expectation. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and any external factors are indirectly reflected through trader behavior.
