Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It's common to see differences emerge, especially when there's significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. Examining these differences can be insightful, but remember that both represent probabilities based on different methodologies.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or other venues. This creates a dynamic pricing mechanism that adapts to new information and changing sentiment.
