Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market allows traders to directly assess the probability of an outcome. It’s common to see prediction markets reflect the 'true' probabilities more accurately, especially as more information becomes available and more people participate. However, sportsbook odds can still provide a useful benchmark for comparison, and discrepancies may present opportunities for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of the event occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares purchased for a particular outcome, the higher the price rises, indicating increased confidence. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd, adjusting in real-time to new information and changing sentiment.
