Prediction market odds often differ from traditional sportsbook odds, reflecting the differing incentives and information sources of each. Sportsbooks set odds to maximize profit, factoring in a margin for themselves, while prediction markets are driven by the collective opinions of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This can lead to prediction market odds being more efficient, particularly when a large number of participants contribute. It’s common to see this market diverge from initial sportsbook lines as new information becomes available and traders adjust their positions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices adjust to reflect the evolving consensus. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or other prediction markets.
