Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a margin for profit, while this market allows traders to freely adjust probabilities based on their own research and information. If sportsbook odds heavily favor one player, but volume in this market suggests a more competitive expectation, it could indicate a disagreement between the two. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more nuanced probabilities, especially as new information becomes available closer to the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the prices adjust to reflect the collective assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price movements are driven by supply and demand – if many traders believe a particular player will win, they will buy shares, driving up the price and increasing the implied probability of that outcome.
