Currently, prediction market odds often reflect a different assessment of probabilities than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while Polymarket allows traders to directly express their beliefs about the likelihood of each outcome. It's common to see discrepancies, especially early in the market's life cycle, as prediction markets can rapidly incorporate new information and collective intelligence. Examining these differences can be insightful, as they reveal where the 'wisdom of the crowd' diverges from professional oddsmakers’ expectations for this match.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome – in this case, either Navneet Raghuram or Kai Thompson winning the match. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a real-time probability estimate. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the collective judgment of all traders participating in the market, and it’s constantly updating as new information becomes available and opinions shift.
