Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance betting action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs about the probability of each outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. It’s common to see prediction markets more accurately forecast outcomes, particularly when there is strong community engagement and informed trading.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell contracts representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more people buy contracts for a specific outcome, the price of those contracts increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a contract represents the probability of that outcome occurring, and traders aim to profit by accurately predicting the event's result. The market price is constantly adjusting based on supply and demand, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the match's potential winner.
