Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event as determined by traders. Therefore, you may find differences between the implied probabilities on Polymarket and those offered by sportsbooks. These differences can arise from varying levels of expertise, access to information, and the motivations of participants in each venue. It's important to consider these factors when comparing odds.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price of shares will adjust accordingly, providing a dynamic assessment of the event's likelihood. This creates a crowdsourced forecast, aggregating the knowledge and opinions of many individuals.
