Prediction markets like Polymarket and Predict are crowd-sourced venues where traders buy and sell shares tied to outcomes, setting prices through supply and demand rather than a bookmaker's margin. Sportsbooks, by contrast, employ oddsmakers and hold a built-in vig. Prediction market prices often reflect sharper, more granular information because traders have direct financial skin in the game and can adjust positions in real time. This market's odds may diverge from traditional sportsbook lines, especially as new data surfaces or as one venue attracts more volume than the other.
Key catalysts include lineup announcements, injury reports on star players, weather conditions at game time, and recent team performance trends. Betting line movement at major sportsbooks often precedes shifts in prediction markets, so monitoring those can provide early signals. Breaking news about pitcher availability, trades, or roster changes can trigger sharp repricing. As game time approaches, this market typically tightens around consensus expectations. Early trading volume and platform-specific price action may also hint at where sophisticated traders are positioning, offering clues about likely direction.
