Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own informed opinions. If sportsbook odds heavily favor one outcome, but this market shows a more balanced probability, it could indicate disagreement among informed bettors. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when there’s significant public interest or new information emerges. Analyzing these differences can be insightful.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time forecast. This differs from fixed-odds betting, where the odds are set in advance.
