Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market prices and sportsbook odds, it might indicate differing opinions on the likelihood of a particular outcome. It’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are shaped by different incentives and information sources. Analyzing these differences can be a valuable part of your overall research.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means that as more traders believe a particular outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. The market efficiently aggregates the collective wisdom of traders, providing a real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
