Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially diverging from sportsbook odds which may be influenced by factors like house bias or public perception. Sportsbooks typically set initial lines to balance betting action, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs about the true probability of each outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise, encouraging traders to exploit the difference and push the prices closer together. It’s common to see prediction markets being more accurate than traditional forecasts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price fluctuates, reflecting the evolving collective assessment of the event's likelihood. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date information and insights available to traders.
