Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may adjust less quickly to new information or shifts in public opinion. This market, driven by active traders, incorporates a wider range of perspectives and can potentially offer more accurate probabilities as the event approaches. Examining the difference between these odds can reveal insights into where the market perceives an edge or disagreement with conventional wisdom.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome will occur, the higher the share price will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated to reflect the latest information and collective intelligence of the participants.
