Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market relies on individuals expressing their beliefs through trading. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or risk assessments. It's common to see prediction markets move more efficiently as new information becomes available, potentially offering a more accurate forecast than static sportsbook lines. Comparing the two can provide valuable insights into public perception and potential value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and share their views, the price adjusts dynamically, reflecting the evolving consensus. This creates a real-time assessment of the likelihood of either player winning the match, driven entirely by supply and demand within the market.
