Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while prediction markets are driven by the collective wisdom of traders who have skin in the game. This can lead to differences in probabilities, particularly when there is strong public sentiment or inside information not yet reflected in sportsbook lines. It’s common to see this market diverge from initial sportsbook assessments as new information emerges and traders refine their forecasts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the prices adjust to reflect the collective forecast.
