Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, factoring in biases and perceived public interest. This market, however, allows individuals to express their beliefs directly, leading to odds that may be more accurate, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. It's common to see discrepancies, as prediction markets are driven by information aggregation rather than profit margins.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the aggregated sentiment of those trading, and can shift rapidly based on new information or changes in perceived probabilities.
