Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, and may be influenced by marketing or public perception. This market, however, represents the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to make accurate predictions. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, analytical approaches, or simply varying levels of confidence in a particular outcome. Comparing these odds can reveal where the crowd believes there’s value or mispricing relative to conventional betting options.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a specific outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts accordingly, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's potential results. The current price indicates the collective forecast of all participants in this market.
