Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective wisdom of traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing a player, they can drive the price on Polymarket in the opposite direction. This can lead to discrepancies, with prediction markets sometimes offering more accurate probabilities, particularly when there's strong public disagreement with the initial sportsbook lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of each player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares purchased for a particular player, the higher their price rises, indicating increased confidence. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated based on the latest information and trader sentiment regarding the Shanghai tennis match.
