Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or risk assessments. If there's a significant difference between the implied probability on Polymarket and sportsbook odds, it could indicate an opportunity for informed traders to capitalize on perceived mispricings.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy shares in a specific outcome, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of that outcome occurring. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants.
