It's common to see differences between prediction market odds and those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, being driven by user predictions, may reflect a more collective assessment of probabilities, potentially identifying discrepancies where the 'wisdom of the crowd' differs from sportsbook estimations. Polls and analyst predictions can also offer a contrasting viewpoint, but prediction markets allow participants to put their capital behind their beliefs, creating a unique signal that isn't always present in other forms of forecasting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe in a particular outcome, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd and adjusts in real-time based on new information and trading activity. The current volume of trading provides insight into the market's confidence.
