Frequently asked questions

Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks incorporate a profit margin into their odds, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when public opinion diverges from expert analysis. It’s common to see prediction markets more accurately reflect true probabilities, particularly as more information becomes available and trading volume increases. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view of the expected outcome.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the valuation. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
