Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, incorporating a ‘vig’ or commission. This market, however, is driven purely by the collective predictions of traders, attempting to forecast the most likely outcome. While sportsbooks may initially favor one competitor, this market can shift rapidly based on new information or changing sentiment. It's common to see discrepancies, as prediction markets can sometimes aggregate information more efficiently than traditional sources, potentially offering a more accurate forecast.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic process ensures the market price reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd, constantly adjusting as new information becomes available.
