Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by professional oddsmakers, while this market is driven by individuals making their own predictions and expressing them through trades. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early in the market's life cycle, as prediction markets can incorporate information and analysis that sportsbooks may not immediately account for. Examining these differences can be insightful when evaluating the potential outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The closer the match gets, the more the price will reflect the perceived likelihood of each player winning, as new information becomes available and traders adjust their positions.
